Neighbourhood Watch

March Rural Neighbourhood Watch Association.

As an aid to crime prevention, several members have carried out environmental audits  around the village covering - social disorder (people problems) physical disorder (vanalism, litter etc.) parking/traffic, drugs and substance misuse, graffiti, and conversely - comfort factors like police patrols.  NW signs, signposts etc.   If you would like to complete an audit yourself for your street, please contact me for a proforma.  We would welcome your input.

Another method of "Venting Your Spleen" would be to fill in a suggestion slip and place it in the police box in the "Premier" shop.  The contents are protected and the police reaction to you will be absolutely discrete.  All information is carefully covered by the Data Protection Act.  So you can be sure!  Small leads like this lead to a more pleasant life for some residents in our midst.  Dog mess, barking etc. Kids kicking footballs, vandalism, it can all be a nightmare for people who just want piece and quiet.  A word discretely whispered in the right ear may do the trick.

Crime is relatively low (thankfully).  But stay on your guard for opportunists.  Lock doors, sheds and outbuildings when not in use.  Keep the house lit when absent, leave a radio on just to give that "lived in appearance, tell your trusted neighbour your movements.  If they are in the know, they'll soon spot odd actions on your behalf.  Please check your smoke detectors.    They're currently running a public relations film on TV "Push the button, not your luck"  Don't watch it, DO IT! Please.

We intend to have further fund raising events as the summer approaches.  I'm pleased to announce the quiz made £101.00 for the funds, with two clever individuals who were marked 45/50 correct answers.  Thank you for competing, it was a resounding success.

Be Safe.   Regards.   Jim Jackson.

DO`s and DON`Ts.    If a doorstep caller knocks at your door.......

DO check the identity of the caller by asking to see an ID card.

DON`T believe all callers are genuine.  DON`t believe the "scare stories" a salesman tell you - they are rarely true.

DO challenge anyone looking over your property - did you give permission?

DON`T believe genuine tarmac companies have "loads over" they don`t.

DO consider if you really need the work done.  Think before you decide.  Shop around for the best deal.

DON`T believe a cash deal is easier and cheaper.

DO ask the caller to leave you with information to study at your leisure.

DON`T sign anything or pay anything until you are sure about it.

DO remember you should be given a right to cancel a contract after "cold calling"

DON`T believe special deals "today only" - its high pressure selling.

DON`T answer your door unless you are sure.  If you are concerned about doorstep callers in your area, pass the information on.  Call the Trading Standards Doorstep Hotline Tel: 0845 60 444 66

March Rural Neighbourhood Watch Association.

Our village Neighbourhood Watch is part of the March Rural Neighbourhood Watch Association and has been in existence since May 2001.

It covers the rural villages of Wimblington, Doddington, Benwick and  Christchurch.

It meets once a quarter as a whole unit but each village runs its own section and they individually meet to discuss there own village needs, strategies and fundraising events.  We have 16 co-ordinators at present though there are some streets that still need to be covered - any volunteers?

We  adopted the Data Link scheme whereby each householder is given the opportunity to a pack which consists of a container, stickers and a form on which you write down your medicines and medical condition.  This goes in the fridge door and should the emergency services be called to attend the property they would notice the sticker on your door, this informs them to look in your fridge for the information required should you not be in a fit state to talk to them.  This saves any medicines being given to you that are not compatible with your prescribed drugs.  Simple idea but it works.

The Safety Door Wedge scheme is on offer.  This is a door stop that comes in three different sizes as door jams vary.  When your bell rings you may not know who is outside so open your door only a little by placing the granny boot behind the door; as the door opens the Safety Door Wedge comes in contact and stops the door opening further than you wish until you have identified your caller.

The BOBBY scheme is also on offer to all over 60 vulnerable people.  This scheme covers the Safety aspect.  Should you be in need of a chain fitted or window locks or window sashes replaced etc anything to do with safety, you can apply to the Bobby scheme and (provided you qualify) they will come and fix you up free of charge.

Distraction burglary is rife all year round.  Be aware, don't let anyone into your home unless you know them.  If in doubt check with the firm in question, all service men should carry an identity card with his name on, check that he should officially be in your area.

DO NOT EVER GIVE OUT YOUR DETAILS OVER THE PHONE IF REQUESTED TO.  ESPECIALLY BANK DETAILS.

Phone the police and report the incident.
